Santa Monica High School Science & Tech Bldg

Santa Monica, CA

Project Background

Santa Monica High School is a public high school founded in 1891. Funded by Measure BB, the new $55-million Science and Technology building completed construction in 2015. Also known as the Innovation Building, the establishment features 15 science labs, 17 classrooms, 8 prep rooms, a computer lab, an auto shop, and 6 administrative offices. At the time of reveal, school district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker described that the building “represents a model of what 21st century classrooms and science labs should be.”

Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District chose Stone Roofing Company to weatherproof the new state-of-the art Innovation Building roof. Stone Roofing installed nearly 35,000 square feet of multi ply built up roofing with an additional white reflective coating. Though not visible in the above photo, Stone Roofing also roofed in around 300 flashings for solar supports, allowing the roof to be solar-ready for any time in the future.

Applying a white reflective roof coating on top of a conventional roofing system can act as a shield against the forces of nature. This protective coating can increase a roof’s life expectancy and improve a building’s energy efficiency, thus lowering energy costs.

Stone Roofing is honored to have been a part of this noteworthy project for Santa Monica High School and to have fostered a new relationship with this fine institution.
